Podróż przez pustynię z gośćmi zza oceanu
English Bible Camp w Mikołowie
Wprawdzie w Mikołowie niełatwo o pustynię, którą można by przemierzyć; niemniej mieliśmy okazję, aby tak jak Naród Wybrany przed tysiącami lat, uczyć się o łasce Bożej i jej doświadczać. Amazing Desert Journey (ang. Wspaniała podróż przez pustynię) – pod takim właśnie hasłem w dniach 30.07-3.08 przebiegał wakacyjny obóz z językiem angielskim (English Bible Camp). Przypomnijmy, że podobne półkolonie, również z udziałem gości z USA, odbyły się przed dwoma laty – wtedy pod hasłem przewodnim All Right (ang. wszystko w porządku, wszystko „na swoim miejscu”).
Organizację obozu zawdzięczamy, przede wszystkim, piątce wspaniałych wolontariuszy ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, którzy wyrazili swoją gotowość do głoszenia wśród najmłodszych Słowa Bożego w krajach nieanglojęzycznych. Barbara, Elaine, Kathy, Martha i Pastor Dallas przybyli do nas z różnych zakątków USA, by razem z nami dzielić się Ewangelią Pana. Naszych gości powitaliśmy podczas nabożeństwa w niedzielę poprzedzającą tydzień z językiem angielskim; po uroczystości w kościele każdy miał możliwość poznać ich osobiście i porozmawiać w ogrodzie parafialnym przy kawie i herbacie.
Nasi goście przygotowali niezwykle urozmaicony program zajęć. Od poniedziałku do piątku spotykaliśmy się rankiem w kościele, by wspólnie pomodlić się za nadchodzący dzień; następnie, podzieleni na trzy grupy (czerwoni – red, niebiescy – blue oraz zieloni – green), udawaliśmy się kolejno na różne zajęcia. Łączyliśmy „pożyteczne z pożytecznym” – Słowo Boże i język obcy, nie zapominając przy tym o dobrej zabawie. Pogłębialiśmy wiedzę o historiach biblijnych i przekonaliśmy się, jak bardzo podobne są one do sytuacji z udziałem naszych rodzin czy przyjaciół. Pod namiotem w ogrodzie odbywały się następnie warsztaty plastyczne, gdzie najmłodsi mogli dać upust swojej kreatywności, ozdabiając torby, robiąc przeróżne naszyjniki i bransoletki przyjaźni. Natomiast podczas zajęć w salkach parafialnych uczyliśmy się wersetów biblijnych (a dokładniej: fragmentu modlitwy Ojcze Nasz) – nie tylko w języku angielskim, lecz również… migowym!
Po zregenerowaniu sił przy obiedzie rozpoczynały się lekcje języka angielskiego, zajęcia muzyczne oraz gry i zabawy. W szczególności wszystkim przypadła do gustu piosenka przewodnia obozu o podróży przez pustynię, która wraz z modlitwą w języku migowym została zaprezentowana podczas niedzielnego nabożeństwa. Należy podkreślić, że obóz miał wymiar nie tylko religijny, lecz również miał na celu rozwinięcie umiejętności językowych – Amerykanie posługiwali się wyłącznie swoim językiem ojczystym. Sprawne porozumiewanie się między Polakami oraz Amerykanami oraz opiekę nad dziećmi zapewniała grupa tłumaczy-pomocników ze strony polskiej.
Goście z USA, jako ludzie bardzo otwarci i kontaktowi, już w pierwszych dniach obozu zdobyli sympatię swoich podopiecznych. Pracowali nie tylko podczas lekcji, lecz bawili się i grali z najmłodszymi podczas przerw między zajęciami. Chętnie rozmawiali, a nawet sami chcieli uczyć się od swoich uczniów języka polskiego, co okazuje się – wcale nie jest takie proste. Stali uczestnicy obozu otrzymali kolorowe koszulki (również zaprezentowane podczas pożegnalnego nabożeństwa), które dodatkowo rozbudzały poczucie wspólnoty.
Nie tylko dzieci zbierały cenne doświadczenia. Nasi goście odwiedzili Polskę po raz pierwszy, dlatego też staraliśmy się pokazać nasz kraj, nasz region z możliwie najlepszej i najciekawszej strony. Gości z Ameryki zaprosiliśmy m.in. do Zabytkowej Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego Guido w Zabrzu czy Tyskiego Browarium. Nie zabrakło również wizyt w jednych z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych muzeów na Śląsku – Auschwitz-Birkenau oraz Zamku Pszczyńskim.
W niedzielę 5 sierpnia nadszedł czas, by się pożegnać. Podczas ostatniego wspólnego nabożeństwa dzieci przedstawiły to, czego nauczyły się w poprzednim tygodniu. Zainteresowani mogli obejrzeć prezentację ze zdjęciami z obozu. W imieniu grupy z USA Pastor Dallas podzielił się swoimi wrażeniami; nawiązując do jego przemówienia, być może nie będzie nam dane spotkać się ponownie za życia doczesnego, lecz poznaliśmy nowe siostry i nowych braci w wierze, a serdeczne wspomnienia pozostaną w naszej pamięci na długo.

A Desert Journey with Our Guests from Overseas
English Bible Camp in Mikolow
Though it is hard to find a desert to cross in our town, the parishioners in Mikolow had an opportunity to learn and experience the Grace of God just like the Chosen People did many years ago in the desert. Amazing Desert Journey – this was the motto of English Bible Camp which took place 30thJuly to 3rdAugust. Let us remind you that a similar camp took place two years ago under the catchphrase All Right – also with the contribution of the guests from the US.
We owe the organization of the camp to the group of five wonderful people from the United States who volunteered to preach the Word of God in non-English-speaking countries. Barbara, Elaine, Kathy, Martha and Pastor Dallas come from different parts of the United States of America to share the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. During the Sunday service preceding the camp our community greeted the guests and after the ceremony each parishioner could personally meet them and have a nice conversation by the table while drinking tea or coffee.
Our guests had prepared a diversified program for the children. From Monday to Friday we gathered every morning in the church for an introductory part to pray altogether for the upcoming days. Then the students were divided into three groups: blue, green and red, and took turns to attend one of the three lesson according to their color. The teachers managed to combine the Word of God with English lessons, the things which are more often taught separately, without forgetting the fun aspect. We deepened the knowledge about Bible stories and learnt how close they are to our everyday life. In the garden of the parish premises there was a tent set where children could unleash their creativity while decorating bags, designing necklaces or tying colorful friendship bracelets. During the lessons in parish classrooms we learnt Bible verses (more precisely: the extract from paternoster) by heart, not only in English but also - in a sign language!
After dinner and strength regeneration there was a time for lessons of English in common and more relaxing activities: music classes, plays and games. The leading song of the meetings, Amazing Desert Journey, was especially commended by all the participants which was presented, as well as the prayer in sign language, to the community during the Sunday service after the camp. We would like to underline, that English Bible Camp was not only a religious initiative but also aimed to familiarize the young generation with the most popular foreign language in our region – the guests from America used their native language only. The communication between American and Polish citizens was assured by the group of Polish helpers and translators.
The group of American volunteers turned out to be extremely sociable and open-minded so that they easily won the youngsters over. They worked not only in the classrooms but also played with children during breaks. They got into conversations eagerly and even asked their students to teach them some Polish vocabulary which turned out not to be easy. The participants, who attended the classes regularly, were given colorful t-shirts which additionally nourished the spirit of group membership.
These were not only the children who gained invaluable experience. Our guests visited Poland for the first time and this was the reason why we tried to present our country in the most beautiful and interesting manner possible. They were invited inter alia to the Guido Coal Mine, Tychy Brewery and to the two most recognizable museums in Silesia: Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and to the Castle Museum in Pszczyna.
Sunday 5thAugust was unfortunately the day to say goodbye to our visitors. During the ceremony children presented what they have learnt during the past week. There was also a possibility to see the presentation with pictures from the camp. Pastor Dallas shared the remembrances and experiences from the visit in Poland on behalf of the whole group. The memorable thing mentioned in his speech was that we probably never meet again but we gained new Brothers and Sisters in Faith and the heartwarming memories will not be forgotten.
